How to Properly Dispose of Your Waste in Melbourne?

Most of what comes out of a home clean-up or renovation can go straight into a general waste skip. A few categories can’t — knowing which ones before your bin arrives saves a rejected load and a re-collection fee.

What goes in a general waste skip

Timber, plasterboard, tiles, concrete and brick, old furniture, carpet, general household rubbish, garden and green waste, and metal all go in without issue. Mixed loads are fine — you don’t need to sort general waste before it goes in the bin.

What needs separate arrangements

Asbestos (including old fibro sheeting) has to go in a dedicated, sealed asbestos bin under EPA rules — it can’t be mixed in with general waste. Tyres, car batteries, gas bottles, paint tins and other liquids, and mattresses are usually charged separately or need to be arranged in advance, since councils and tip facilities process them differently to general waste. E-waste — old TVs, computers, printers — is banned from landfill in Victoria entirely and needs a dedicated e-waste drop-off.
