“Clean and tidy” covers a lot of different jobs. Here’s where a skip bin genuinely earns its keep, and where it doesn’t.
The jobs a bin is built for
Renovation and reno debris — plasterboard, old cabinetry, tiles, timber offcuts — is heavy and awkward, exactly what a 4m³–6m³ bin is sized for. Garage and shed clean-outs tend to be volume-heavy rather than weight-heavy, so a 2m³–4m³ bin usually covers it. Deceased estate and pre-sale clean-ups are often the largest jobs we see — mixed furniture, whitegoods and general household waste in one go — and are almost always a 6m³ or larger booking.
Sizing it without guessing
The most common mistake is under-sizing to save money, then paying for a second bin anyway. As a rough guide: a 2m³ bin holds about 15–20 standard wheelie bin loads, a 4m³ around double that, and a 6m³ is generally enough for a full single-room gut renovation.
