How you load a skip bin affects both how much fits and whether it gets collected without a hitch. Five practical tips.
1. Flatten before you load
Cardboard, flat-pack furniture and anything with hollow space should be broken down first — it can double the effective capacity of the bin.
2. Heavy items first, distributed evenly
Load dense material like tiles, bricks or timber first and spread the weight across the base rather than piling it in one corner — an unevenly loaded bin is harder and slower to collect safely.
3. Fill the gaps, don’t just stack
Smaller offcuts and loose material packed into the gaps between larger items uses space that would otherwise go to waste.
4. Keep it under the fill line
Bins can’t legally be transported with material above the fill line. If you’re at the line before you’re finished, it’s worth asking about an upsize rather than mounding material on top.
5. Separate anything prohibited before it goes in
Asbestos, e-waste, tyres and gas bottles need separate arrangements — sorting these out before loading avoids a flagged bin at the tip.
